Custom Decks

Michigan Custom Decks

Woodcraft Design & Build has been building custom decks across Southeast Michigan since 1984. From single-level Trex composite decks to multi-level curved designs with integrated outdoor living features, our decks combine the durability of TrexPro Platinum certified installation with 40+ years of Michigan-specific construction expertise. Custom decks typically range from $20,000 to $45,000 depending on size, materials, and complexity.

What’s Included in a Woodcraft Custom Deck

Every Woodcraft custom deck starts with an in-home consultation and free estimate. From there, we handle design, engineering, permitting, material sourcing, and construction with our own crews. There’s no subcontracting out the build to whoever’s available that week – the same Woodcraft team that quotes your project is the team that builds it.

Our standard process includes: structural design and load calculations; permit applications with your municipality; HOA approvals where required; material delivery and staging; foundation work using either traditional concrete footings or GoliathTech helical piers (our recommended option for sites with established landscaping or winter installations); framing; decking installation; railing systems; and any integrated features like built-in benches, planters, lighting, or outdoor kitchens.

How Much Does a Custom Deck Cost?

Custom decks built by Woodcraft Design & Build typically range from $20,000 to $45,000. The variables driving cost are size in square feet, decking material (composite costs more upfront but lasts dramatically longer than wood), railing system (cable and glass railings cost more than traditional balusters), foundation type, and any integrated features.

A straightforward 200 to 300 square foot composite deck with standard railings typically lands in the lower end of the range. A larger multi-level deck with cable railings, integrated lighting, and an outdoor kitchen footprint moves to the upper end. We provide detailed line-item quotes after the free estimate so you can see exactly what’s driving the number.

Composite Decking Options

We lead with Trex composite decking. As a TrexPro Platinum certified contractor (a designation held by approximately 5% of contractors nationally), we have direct manufacturer support, extended warranty coverage, and access to the full Trex product line including Transcend, Enhance, and Select.

For homeowners seeking different aesthetics or price points, we also install TimberTech composite systems and Deckorators composite decking. All composite materials carry manufacturer warranties between 25 and 50 years.

Wood Decking Options

Pressure-treated wood remains a viable option for budget-conscious homeowners or for projects where natural materials are preferred. We build pressure-treated and cedar decks with proper drainage, ventilation, and weatherproofing designed for Michigan freeze-thaw cycles.

Curved Decks – A Woodcraft Specialty

Curved deck construction requires specialized equipment and experience that most deck builders simply don’t have. Woodcraft Design & Build is one of the few contractors in Southeast Michigan with the heating and bending capability to produce true curved deck designs – not just decks with angled corners that approximate curves. Curved sections work particularly well around pools, hot tubs, and architectural features where right angles look forced.

How Long Does a Custom Deck Take to Build?

Most custom decks are completed in 1 to 2 weeks once construction begins. The full timeline from contract signing to completed deck is typically 4 to 8 weeks, accounting for permitting, HOA approval where applicable, and material ordering.

Contrary to common assumption, fall and winter builds often work better than peak summer. Material pricing tends to be more stable in slower months, our scheduling is more flexible, and assuming moderate weather, the construction process moves smoothly. If you want to be enjoying your new deck by Memorial Day, starting the conversation in January or February is often the right move.

Permits and HOA Approvals

We handle all permitting paperwork as part of every project. Permit requirements vary by city and township across Southeast Michigan, and we have direct working relationships with permit offices throughout Wayne, Oakland, Washtenaw, Livingston, Macomb, and Genesee counties. Where HOA approval is required, we provide the documentation packages your association needs.
